Straw pictures (12 items)
A common characteristic of many folk crafts made in Slovakia is that the artists use materials found in their midst. These beautiful, handmade pictures are a good example. Straw is used in each of these pictures and it is readily available throughout the country.
To make these creative pictures, the artist starts by slicing stalks of straw lengthwise, flattens them out and glues one stalk next to another on a sheet of paper. A hot iron is held on these sheets of straw to get the shades of brown seen in many of these pictures.
To create the flower bouquets found in some of these pictures, the artist removes the tiny petals from wildflowers and then carefully arranges them using a hypodermic needle.
